GE Gas Engines to Power Alternative Energy Projects

See on Scoop.itGreen Energy Technologies & Development

GE to Supply Jenbacher J620 Engines to Power GWED’s Waste-to-Energy Projects – […] to power a series of Advanced Recycling and Energy Conversion (AREC) plants that GWE’s development subsidiary, Green Waste Energy Development (GWED), plans to build around the world.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>GWED uses C6 Technologies’ proprietary and patent-pending, non-burn waste-advanced pyrolysis technology in its AREC projects. The C6 technology can transform a wide range of wastes into “syngas,” which then can be used in gas engines to generate cleaner electricity or produce greener transportation fuels including diesel and jet fuel. C6T licenses its technology to developers worldwide.

Under terms of the agreement, GE will provide GWED with Jenbacher J620 gas engines, which will use the syngas produced at GWED’s waste-gasification facilities to generate renewable electricity. Each installed gas engine will generate nearly 2MWof reliable on-site power. GE also will provide technical support for GWED’s installed engine fleet.<

Go geothermal to maximize energy efficiency

See on Scoop.itGreen Building Design – Architecture & Engineering

A huge leap in energy conservation, and undoubtedly the most innovative of all energy saving tactics has its origins in the earth itself

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>This geothermal system provides a quiet environment with a consistent temperature throughout the house or building; efficiently comfortable in the winter, and cool in the summer. The heating or cooling mode can be changed with a simple switch on the indoor thermostat. With virtually no use of fossil fuel, costs for heating and cooling for a typical 4,000-square-foot home can run as low as $2 per day/$60 per month.<

DPR Construction’s Phoenix Office First Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building in Arizona

See on Scoop.itGreen Building Design – Architecture & Engineering

PHOENIX, May 17, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) — DPR Construction (DPR), a national technical builder specializing in highly complex and sustainable projects, announced today the achievement of net-zero energy consumption in its Phoenix Regional Office.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>The renovated 16,533-square-foot office building is located in Phoenix’s Discovery Triangle at the corner of 44th Street and Van Buren. In less than 10 months, the team, which included national design firm SmithGroupJJR and global consulting firm DNV KEMA Energy and Sustainability, researched, designed, permitted, and built a highly-efficient, modern workplace with a number of innovative sustainability features including:

— 87 operable windows working in tandem with the energy monitoring system to open and close based on the relative indoor and outdoor temperatures

— 87-foot zinc clad solar chimney which creates a convection current to release hot air out of the building while drawing cooler air in

— Shower towers that act as evaporative coolers by working together with the operable windows and solar chimney to regulate building temperatures

— Twelve eight-foot Isis(R) Big Ass(R) Fans that enable free air flow within the office

— 82 strategically positioned Solatubes(R) that nearly eliminate the need for artificial daytime lighting […]<

Work begins on largest North American fuel cell – Natural Gas to Electricity

See on Scoop.itGreen Energy Technologies & Development

Dominion, one of the US’ largest energy companies, and FuelCell Energy Inc have begun construction of the largest fuel cell power project in North America.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell, which is being built next to the Interstate 95 motorway and the Northeast rail corridor, will produce 14.9 megawatts of clean energy, enough to power approximately 15,000 homes. It will use an electro-chemical process that converts natural gas into electricity.<

Taxes on top of gas taxes outrage Taxpayers Federation – British Columbia – CBC News

See on Scoop.itGreen & Sustainable News

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is raising concerns about the level of taxes on gasoline and diesel fuels B.C., saying drivers in Vancouver now pay the second highest taxes on fuel, after Montreal.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>In B.C. the sales tax is calculated after the motor fuel tax, carbon tax and federal excise tax are added to the price of the fuel.

Those three taxes total 42 cents tax per liter in Greater Vancouver, 34 cents in Victoria, and 31 cents across the rest of B.C. – all before the GST is added on.<

DT:  Current gas prices in Vancouver translate to $5.50/gal US and $5.25/gal US in Chilliwack.  There are no incentives in place for governments who rely on fuel consumption for revenue to seek alternative energy modes for transport.

Refinery woes cause nationwide gas price spike

See on Scoop.itGreen & Sustainable News

Troubles at several oil refineries are driving gasoline prices sharply higher in the Midwest, and the regional shortages are expected to boost the cost of gasoline higher nationwide.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>While the USA may be dripping in new found crude oil deposits and early May supplies were at their highest levels since the early 1930s, issues at a handful of refineries that turn crude into gasoline and diesel fuel underscore how kinks in the supply chain can cause quick surges in what consumers pay at the pump.<

Russia Warns Obama: Global War Over “Bee Apocalypse” | EUTimes.net

See on Scoop.itGreen & Sustainable News

The shocking minutes relating to President Putin’s meeting this past week with US Secretary of State John Kerry reveal the Russian leaders “extreme outrage” over the Obama regimes continued protection of global seed and plant bio-genetic giants Syngenta and Monsanto in the face of a growing “bee apocalypse” that the Kremlin warns “will most certainly” lead to world war.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

>At the center of this dispute between Russia and the US, this MNRE report says, is the “undisputed evidence” that a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically related to nicotine, known as neonicotinoids, are destroying our planets bee population, and which if left unchecked could destroy our world’s ability to grow enough food to feed its population.

So grave has this situation become, the MNRE reports, the full European Commission (EC) this past week instituted a two-year precautionary ban (set to begin on 1 December 2013) on these “bee killing” pesticides following the lead of Switzerland, France, Italy, Russia, Slovenia and Ukraine, all of whom had previously banned these most dangerous of genetically altered organisms from being used on the continent.

[…]

Also to note about Syngenta, this report continues, is that in 2012 it was criminally charged in Germany for concealing the fact that its genetically modified corn killed cattle, and settled a class-action lawsuit in the US for $105 million after it was discovered they had contaminated the drinking supply of some 52 million Americans in more than 2,000 water districts with its “gender-bending” herbicide Atrazine.

To how staggeringly frightful this situation is, the MNRE says, can be seen in the report issued this past March by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) wherein they warned our whole planet is in danger, and as we can, in part, read:  “As part of a study on impacts from the world’s most widely used class of insecticides, nicotine-like chemicals called neonicotinoids, American Bird Conservancy (ABC) has called for a ban on their use as seed treatments and for the suspension of all applications pending an independent review of the products’ effects on birds, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, and other wildlife.<
