Wind energy topped 30% of Danish power consumption at end 2012

Wind power provided enough electricity for over 30% of Denmark’s electricity consumption by the end of 2012. And it has 50% in its sights.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

..Wind still accounts for just 3-4% of electricity production in the US, and the target is to hit 20% by 2030. So, with that context, I think you can see that Denmark’s figure is very impressive.

The Danish Wind Industry Association’s article on the news adds: “Anholt Offshore Wind Farm will be completed at the end of 2013 and by the time the park’s 400 MW will provide 4% of the Danish electricity consumption. In addition, the planning process has started for Horns Rev III of 400 MW, Krieger’s Flak of 600 MW and the near-shore turbines which will have a combined capacity of 500 MW, of which 50 MW will be test turbines.” [sic]

New U.S. Biofuel Proposals Could Draw Heavily from Food Sources — Global Issues

See on Scoop.itGreen Energy Technologies & Development

WASHINGTON, Feb 01 (IPS) – New biofuel requirements proposed by the U.S.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

The announcement, which opens a 45-day feedback period, sets standards under the country’s landmark Renewable Fuel Standard programme. That 1997 legislation established long-term goals for alternative fuel use – 36 billion gallons a year by 2022 – for which the EPA is mandated to set yearly requirements for the country’s petroleum importers and refiners.

By 2013, the 1997 bill states, the U.S. was to be using a billion gallons of cellulosic biofuel. The EPA’s announcement of just 14 million gallons would thus leave a massive shortfall – and even this lower figure could be a stretch.

[…]

Still, the EPA’s new moves have been strongly backed by the biofuels industry.

"The cellulosic biofuels industry is just breaking through at commercial scale," Brooke Coleman, executive director of the Advanced Ethanol Council, a trade group, said in a statement, noting that the EPA had gotten the related standards "just right". "The volume standards proposed … will continue to provide advanced biofuel investors and innovators with a predictable and durable path forward in that effort."

EPA proposes 2013 biofuels quota, RIN verification program – Oil & Gas Journal

See on Scoop.itGreen Energy Technologies & Development

The US Environmental Protection Agency proposed 2013 biofuels quotas representing a more than 1.35 billion gal increase from what it mandated for 2012. Officials from two leading petroleum trade associations immediately called the 16.55 billion gal total representing 9.63% of total projected US motor fuel production unrealistic and unreasonable.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

“We are disturbed that EPA is mandating 14 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol when zero gallons are available for compliance as of today,” AFPM President Charles T. Drevna said on Jan. 31. […]

“[…] This stealth tax on gasoline might be the most egregious example of bad public policy, and consumers could be left to pay the price. EPA needs a serious reality check.”

“[…] it is shocking that the Agency would mandate such high biodiesel volumes this year since 140 million biodiesel credits turned out to be fraudulent,” […] it is unrealistic to assume the biodiesel industry will actually produce 1.28 billion gal of real biodiesel this year.”

WIND ENERGY TOP SOURCE FOR NEW GENERATION IN 2012; AMERICAN WIND POWER INSTALLED NEW RECORD OF 13,124 MW …

See on Scoop.itGreen Energy Technologies & Development

The U.S. wind energy industry had its strongest year ever in 2012 […] installing a record 13,124 megawatts (MW) of electric generating capacity, leveraging $25 billion in private investment, and achieving over 60,000 MW of cumulative wind capacity.

Duane Tilden‘s insight:

In this historic year of achievement, wind energy for the first time became the number one source of new U.S. electric generating capacity, providing some 42 percent of all new generating capacity; the final tally will be released in April in AWEA’s annual report. In fact, 2012 was a strong year for all renewables, as together they accounted for over 55 percent of all new U.S. generating capacity.

“The fact that wind power grew by another 28 percent in 2012 alone and poured $25 billion of private investment into the U.S. last year demonstrates wind’s ability to scale up, and continue to serve as a leading source of energy in America,” Gramlich said.

The global wind energy industry will gather in Chicago, Ill., this May 5-8, 2013, for the world’s largest annual wind power event, WINDPOWER 2013. Thousands of workers and leaders from all sectors will attend to show their wares, attend conference sessions, and seek further solutions for success.
